1944 年 3 月 6 日 Mary Wilson 生於密西西比州的 Greenville,不過隨即搬往聖路易市,接著搬到芝加哥,最後她寄宿在底特律的親戚家,六歲時,母親從密西西比前來接她返家, Mary Wilson 還一直以為寄宿的阿姨才是親母.

12 歲時, Wilson 舉家定居於底特律的 Brewster-Douglass housing projects.除了 Mary Wilson 外, Lily Tomlin, Diana Ross, Florence Ballard 與 Smokey Robinson 均在幼年或青年時期住過這裡.

1958 年, Wilson 念國中時認識了 Florence Ballard,因為對音樂有共同興趣,很快地成為摯友,當 Milton Jenkins 為男子樂團 The Primes (The Primes 與 The Distants 這兩個樂團的團員後來組成 The Temptations) 擔任經紀人時,他也想籌畫另一組名為 The Primettes 的女子樂團,於是他邀請 Ballard 加入, Ballard 又邀請 Wilson, Wilson 又邀請她的新朋友 Diana Ross,最後 Jenkins 找來 Betty McGlown,四人女子樂團於是成軍.

1961 年 The Primettes 與 Motown 簽約,把 McGlown 換成 Barbara Martin,將團名更為 The Supremes,早期四位女生互相擔任主唱, Wilson 在歌唱中展現過人的女中音,樂團出道了兩年都沒有一首歌進入前 40 名, 1963 年 When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through his Eyes 這首歌終於爬進排行榜,同年年底 Diane Ross (就是大家知道的 Diana Ross) 成為樂團固定主唱, Holland-Dozier-Holland 幫忙寫歌,終於產生前十名單曲,從第一名的 Where Did Our Love Go 開始,陸續有十首歌進榜且均得到第一名.

接連三年的成功, Motown 老闆 Berry Gordy 將 The Supremes 更名為 Diana Ross & the Supremes,並將 Florence Ballard 換成 Cindy Birdsong.樂團在 60 年代後期成績下滑,不過 1968 年與 1969 年仍各有一支賣座單曲 (I'm Gonna Make You Love Me 與 I'll Try Something New).

這兩支單曲源於 1968 年 11 月在 Motown 發行的專輯 Diana Ross & the Supremes Join the Temptations,但是內行人買大罐,請聽改編自 Marvin Gaye 的經典單曲 Try It Baby,這個版本有 Melvin Franklin 的低音呢喃與 Diana Ross 飆高音 ; Diana Ross 與 Dennis Edwards 重新翻唱 Marvin Gaye 與 Tammi Terrell 的經典 Ain't No Mountain High Enough 帶給人一波未平,一波又起的感動.

Otis Williams 唱出絲綢般的美聲 This Guy's in Love With You ; Paul Williams 在 Then 的歌唱有傑出表現,此曲翻自 The Four Tops 的曲目, Diana Ross & the Supremes Join the Temptations 收錄 11 首精采內容,很難相信這張專輯不在 Diana Ross, Supremes 與 Temptations 樂迷的珍藏行列.

1970 年 Diana Ross 單飛, Jean Terrell 成為主唱, 1970-72 年也出現許多大賣單曲如 Up The Ladder To The Roof, Stoned Love, River Deep-Mountain High (與 The Four Tops 合唱), Nathan Jones 和 Floy Joy, Wilson 與 Terrell 在 Touch, Floy Joy 和 Automatically Sunshine 幾首歌中共同擔任主唱.

1972 年 Cindy Birdsong 因為結婚退出團體, Stevie Wonder 樂團 Wonderlove 的前歌手 Lynda Laurence 加入, Terrell 與 Laurence 在樂團停留短暫, 1973 年 Stevie Wonder 製作的歌曲 Bad Weather 沒有成功,她們也退出 The Supremes.

Wilson 找來 Scherrie Payne 與 Freda Payne 的胞妹, Cindy Birdsong 重返樂團,接著 Motown 花費兩年時間為 The Supremes 量身打造新專輯,這段期間 The Supremes 展開密集地巡迴表演, Wilson 嫁給多明尼加商人 Pedro Ferrer.

Wilson 拾起 The Supremes 的領導棒,丈夫 Ferrer 幫忙管理樂團, Wilson 與 Payne 一同擔任主唱,陣容持續到 1976 年, Susaye Greene 加入樂團取代 Birdsong,她也是 Wonderlove 的前任團員, 1977 年 Wilson 終於決定離團單飛,她的最後一場告別演唱會於同年 6 月在英國 Drury Theatre 舉行.

Payne 與 Greene 說當時她們正在尋找新成員遞補,不過同年秋天 Motown 宣布解散 The Supremes, The Supremes 正式走入歷史, Wilson 是 The Supremes 待得最久的原始成員.
