[簡介] Glenn Underground

Glenn Underground 1971 年生於芝加哥,本名叫 Glenn Crocker, Glenn Underground 這個名字怎麼來的呢 ? 有一天他朋友問他,到底他的 house 音樂有多 deep ? 他說 : it was under the ground,後來他就給自己取了這個名字. 除了 Glenn Underground,其他化名還有 C.V.O, GU, Soul Survivors 與 Strictly Jazz Unit.

Strictly Jaz Unit 是他與朋友 Boo Williams , Vick Lavender, Brian Harden 與 Tim Harper, Dae-dae, Cei-Bei 等人所組, Boo Williams 與 Glenn Underground 是摯友,他們相識已久,一起 djing,一起製作歌曲.

他自許將 Marcus Miller (黑人靈魂爵士藝人) 的靈魂樂風注入 house 音樂,受到芝加哥 house 先鋒 Larry Heard, Ron Hardy, Lil' Louis 等人的影響,並在芝加哥南部長大 - house 音樂的發源地.

GU (Glenn Underground) 有個叔叔是 Dae-Dae,是芝加哥 DJ 也是 Strictly Jaz Unit 的成員,在 Green Velvet 的廠牌 Cajual 發過一張 ep,因此奠定他日後成為優質的 house DJ / 製作人.

GU 的 DJ 叔叔時常在家族聚會時播放音樂, 10 歲的 GU 在叔叔的影響下就開始學 djing,至今已超過 20 年,事實上他的家族皆喜歡音樂, GU 小時後的唱片均傳承於母親 - 許多經典歌曲,還有 Earth, Wind and Fire. GU 的繼父是一位吉他手, 7 - 11 歲時,他常聆聽繼父的 band 在家裡排練.

年輕時的他足跡跳遍了芝加哥的每場派對 - Lil' Louis 辦的 Firehouse 派對, Ron Hardy 辦的 Music Box 派對, Frankie Knuckles 辦的 Gallery 21 派對... GU 如數家珍 :『以前芝加哥根本很少犯罪事件 - 因為大家都在派對』

說到他的 house 音樂,除了靈魂,爵士與『deep under the ground』外,『disco』也是他一直以來所堅持的,應該這麼說 : disco 是所有芝加哥 house DJs / producers 所堅持的.

『沒有 disco 就沒有 house』他在一篇專訪中提到,到底 disco 在芝加哥有多重要 ? 多年前有一群白人瘋子,帶了超過 10 萬張 disco 唱片到 Kaminsky 公園,並宣稱 disco 已死,要燒掉這些唱片,其他人則為了要捍衛這些 disco 唱片,爆發肢體衝突,後來演變為政治事件.

『disco 在芝加哥真的很有內涵,不像在英國, disco 被 Bee Gees 搞成那麼廉價』GU 義憤填膺地批判著... 『我不認為歐洲人會接受整晚的派對播放老經典 - 像是 Harold Melvin 與 Bluenotes , Thelma Houston 那類,但是在芝加哥就可以』

他是目前少數 DJs 可以成功地將 deep house,爵士, disco,還有 70 年代在芝加哥派對中受歡迎的經典歌曲融合在一個 set 裡面. GU 的音樂可以在以下廠牌找到:Cajual , Peacefrog , Guidance , Nite Life Collective , Track Mode , Large Records .
