Carmen McRae 是美國爵士歌手、鋼琴家、作曲家和演員。出生在美籍牙買加裔的家庭，八歲習琴，家中充滿 Louis Armstrong 與 Duke Ellington 的唱片。十七歲遇見 Billie Holiday，深深影響了 McRae。

1944 年 她得到一份重要工作，在 Benny Carter 大樂團擔任鋼琴手；與 Count Basie 一起工作，當她在布魯克林演奏時，受到 Decca 唱片製作人 Milt Gabler 注意，McRae 在 Decca 發行了十二張黑膠唱片。

‎1954 年 McRae 獲得 Down Beat 雜誌評選為最佳爵士女歌手，雖然早年與 Billie Holiday 結識，二人卻沒有一起合唱，1983 年 McRae 錄製專輯 For Lady Day，翻唱 Holiday 的歌曲（1995 年發行），此外她與其他爵士樂手合作過的專輯有：Boy Meets Girl（1957 w/Sammy Davis, Jr.）、Take Five Live（1961 w/ Dave Brubeck）、The Real Ambassadors（1961 w/ Dave Brubeck）、Heat Wave（1982 w/ Cal Tjader）、Two for the Road（1989 w/ George Shearing）等。



1990 年 4 月 Sarah Vaughan 往生，半年後 Carmen McRae 錄製專輯 Sarah: Dedicated to You，向 Sarah Vaughan 致敬。這是 McRae 的晚年錄音，其實 McRae 比 Vaughan 大四歲，而 McRae 在錄製 Sarah: Dedicated to You 時，已經七十歲了。

Sarah: Dedicated to You 是繼 1988 年 McRae 向 Thelonious Monk 致敬的專輯 Carmen Sings Monk 之後另一張高評價的致敬專輯，Shirley Horn 的三重奏成員為 McRae 在 Sarah: Dedicated to You 擔任伴奏，可惜的是，在 McRae 的邀約下，Shirley Horn 還是不願意在 Sarah: Dedicated to You 一起獻聲。

不過 McRae 還是演唱了許多 Sarah Vaughan 的經典曲目，如 Sarah、Misty、Tenderly、Poor Butterfly 及 I'll Be Seeing You 等，在歌聲迴盪之餘似乎可以感受到 Vaughan 的靈魂與精神。Sarah: Dedicated to You 獲得 All Music Guide 四星半高評價！

McRae 演唱生涯逾五十載，獲得七屆葛萊美獎提名、參加過八屆的蒙特利爵士音樂節，足跡遍及美國、歐洲與日本，她是二十世紀最重要的爵士歌手之一。
