Des'ree 來自英國倫敦，自幼雙親讓她接觸雷鬼、爵士及加勒比海音樂。十四歲那年 Des'ree 隨家人到父親的故鄉巴貝多（位於加勒比海與大西洋邊界上的獨立島嶼國家），展開三年的旅行，接著她便決定朝著音樂生涯發展。

1991 年 Des'ree 初試啼聲，發行單曲 Feel So High，受到國際各大電台矚目，強力播放之下獲得英國單曲榜第十三名，在澳洲也有第二十八名佳績。



Des'ree 的歌聲具有戀愛調和現代都會生活的風格，透過雷鬼、靈魂、爵士及加勒比海曲風，很快在英國流行樂壇引起注目。

1997 年 Janet Jackson 發行單曲 Got 'til It's Gone，歌曲取樣 Drs'ree 的 Feel So High 卻未知會，也沒有在唱片列出 Des'ree 的名字，引發 Des'ree 律師尋求法律追訴（Got 'til It's Gone 主要取樣自 Joni Mitchell 的 Big Yellow Taxi），判決結果 Janet Jackson 賠償一筆未公開的金額，2000 年 Got 'til It's Gone 發行混音單曲，便在唱片將 Des'ree 列為歌曲創作者之一。

1992 年在英國 Sony 發行首張專輯 Mind Adventures，這張專輯共發行三支單曲，分別是 Feel So High、Why Should I Love You? 及同名單曲 Mind Adventures。

1993 年和美國歌手 Terence Trent D'Arby 合唱單曲 Delicate（收錄在 Terence Trent D'Arby 的 1993 年專輯 Terence Trent d'Arby's Symphony or Damn），攻占英國單曲榜前十名，可惜未受美國聽眾青睞。

1994 年單曲 You Gotta Be 是 Des'ree 的生涯代表作之一，高居美國告示牌行榜第五名，成人抒情榜第二名，在告示單曲榜停留時間逾八十週；同年 VH1 評選 You Gotta Be 為最常播放 MV，這支 MV 透過黑白影片方式拍攝，獲得 1995 年 MTV 最佳女歌手音樂錄影帶提名。

You Gotta Be 分別在 1994、1995 及 1999 發行三次，因此也進出英國榜三次。由於歌曲的都會風格濃厚，在各國分別成為珠寶首飾、汽車、銀行等廣告歌曲，同年也成為電影 The Next Karate Kid（新小子難纏）的片尾曲。

一項為兒童熱線籌募的活動 The Big Sing，邀請從愛爾蘭到英國，數百間學校的兒童，在同一時間歌唱，You Gotta Be 獲得 2008 年該活動的歌唱曲，一起來欣賞當時拍攝的影片：

這項活動持續進行，若加入的兒童夠多，將報名金氏世界記錄。Maryhill 學校同時間（2008 年 11 月 27 日下午二點四十五分）在學校裡加入這場有意義的活動，根據影帶敘述，2005 年共有 29 萬 3978 位兒童一同歌唱，活動將朝向一百萬位兒童邁進，以下是該校學生合唱的影片：



這是另一間聖馬丁國小的 合唱影片。You Gotta Be 的成功，讓 Des'ree 展開巡迴演出，包括在梵諦岡的演出，十分特殊且深具意義。

2005 年無伴奏人聲樂團 DeCadence 翻唱 You Gotta Be，收錄在專輯 Songs From the Closet；日籍英裔流行歌手 MiChi 翻唱 You Gotta Be，收錄在專輯 MiChi Madness；東京 EMO 樂團 Nature Living 翻唱 You Gotta Be，收錄在專輯 After All。

You Gotta Be 的高知名度，使第二張專輯 I Ain't Movin' 創下一百六十萬張銷售成績，1995 年得以參與 Seal 的美國巡迴。

A2 單曲 Crazy Maze 亦收錄在 1997 年電影 Nothing to Lose（王牌任務）原聲帶。

1996 年發行單曲 Kissing You，收錄在巴茲·雷曼執導的《羅密歐與茱麗葉》（李奧納多主演）電影原聲帶。



1997 年 Kissing You 在澳洲發行單曲，登上單曲榜第十七名；2008 年 Taylor Dayne 翻唱這首歌，收錄在專輯 Satisfied；碧昂絲在 2007 年翻唱 Still in Love (Kissing You)，收錄在專輯 B'Day 的豪華版，結果因為版權侵犯問題，被 Des'ree 控訴十五萬美金的索賠，所以後來再版的專輯，便將這首歌移除。

1998 年六月 Des'ree 發行單曲 Life，在澳洲、義大利、荷蘭、西班牙等地登上單曲榜冠軍，成為 Des'ree 最暢銷的歌曲。



成功的背後總會受到批評，Life 的歌詞結合迷信、恐怖症及環遊世界三個主題，搭配愉悅樂觀的旋律，不過旋律太過簡單，歌詞也過於平庸，引來樂評嘲笑，2007 年英國 BBC 甚至票選 Life 為史上最糟流行樂歌詞之一，由其是以下這段：

I don't want to see a ghost
It's the sight that I fear most
I'd rather have a piece of toast

Life 收錄在專輯 Supernatural，前文敘述的 I'm Kissing You 也收錄在這裡，Des'ree 還翻唱 Bruce Springsteen 的歌曲 Fire，這首歌隨後由 Des'ree 和 Babyface 合唱，收錄在電影 Hav Plenty（神魂顛倒四人情）。

她的聲音有一股安定的力量，讓人得以平靜。

2003 年 Des'ree 發行專輯 Dream Soldier，開場曲 It's Okay 亦發行單曲，可惜專輯和單曲未獲市場青睞，之後她就在唱片發行的陣列中消失了。

除了為兒童發聲，Des'ree 也是人道對待動物協會（People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals，簡稱 PETA）的積極擁護者。
